This is a neat item called the ULTIMATE DIG KIT. It includes 3 bags of material from the Lee Creek Phosphate Mine in North Carolina. The bags are 3 inches in width and 4 inches in height. There is approximately 1 pound of material total. A mini microscope, a collection vial, and a collection case are also included. The material from Lee Creek is rich in MICROFOSSILS. So pour the material from the bags into a shallow box or pan, and then search for the microfossils. When you first look through the kit, you may not see much. Since the fossils are very tiny, you'll need to look at each piece individually in order to find them. Then you may want to go through it again to see if there are any fossils that you missed. It is fun to examine the fossils with the mini microscope and see the details on these tiny pieces! Also included with the dig kit is a color handout with photos which gives a general guide to the fossils in the dig kit (THIS IS A GUIDE OF THE FOSSILS YOU MAY FIND - NOT ALL THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF FOSSILS PICTURED MAY BE PRESENT IN EACH DIG KIT). Most of the fossils you'll find are invertebrate shells, coral, bone fragments, fish and shark tooth fossils. The collection case can be used to hold your tiny treasures. These dig kits are a lot of fun for kids and adults alike. It is a great science activity for kids to encourage searching, learning, and observing!
As an added bonus, there are also some small Nantan meteorite fragments that I mixed in! When I prepare meteorites, there are small fragments left over so I thought it would be fun for the kids to finds some of these fragments in the dig kit! The Nantan meteorite fell in China, but since meteorites fall all over the world, it is possible that a meteorite has fallen in the same location where these micro fossils were found. If you run a magnet over the material, you will easily find the meteorites and then you can keep them in the collection vial!
