Description
Welcome to my auction! For your consideration here is a antique early 1920s Pilliod machinists tool chest in a slant top design covered in leatherette having seven drawers with all wood made of mahogany along with the hardware being solid brass with a hand sewn leather handle. Very few of these early leatherette models have survived in this condition due to age and handling and this particular model with its slant top is not shown in any of the information of the Pilliod company which was located in Swanton, Ohio and was making machinists chests from around 1909 to 1926 or there abouts. The mahogany wood shows nice grain and color and the original polished brass hardware is in great antique condition as well as the hand sewn leather handle with all felt being fresh Gerstner brand. The chest measures 16-1/2" Long x 12-3/4" High x 8-1/2" Deep. The chest came from a gentleman in Pennsylvania, Ohio who had a number of very nice early chests that he purchased through the years in his travels for his job as a engineer. A wonderful antique tool chest for the collector.Origin...USA Swanton, Ohio
Age...1920-1923
Sizes...Length 16-1/2" x Depth 8-1/2" x Height 12-3/4"
Material....Leatherette Covering, Mahogany Wood, Solid Brass Hardware, Hand Sewn Leather handle
Condition...Considering the chest is right at 100 years old I would consider the condition being far above most you will come across n this style with the leatherette covering having only some normal scuffs, small dents and light surface wear, but no damage or anything serious. The mahogany drawers, wood face and mirror surround have remained in clean and well kept condition showing some surface wear and small dents as one would expect and I would say it was not refinished but perhaps had a fresh coat of finish put on at some time in the past. The mirror is also original and is a bit cloudy as they get with the only fault I found was that the Eagle lock which is also original is missing the top catch and I would think one could be resourced or machined or simply purchase a new one if desired. All in all this is a very rare model from a desirable tool chest company that has remained in well kept condition.
