Cowry shells (Cypraea moneta) are a variety of shellfish found in the Maldives and Soulou Islands (between the Philippines and Borneo).
Spread by Arab and European sailors from the tenth century, these shells were used as currency in much of Africa.
Their name comes from the Sanskrit word kaparda or kapardika, then transformed by the English into cauri or cowri.
These shells are still found in the Indian Ocean and Pacific regions.
Cowries continue to be used today as decorations and objects of divination.
