Lepidocyclina ocalana
) inclusions:
Far, far away, there are over a trillion galaxies within our visible range through the Hubble Telescope.
But here on Earth another view can be seen through a “Galaxy Rock.”
At the bottom of a Florida limestone Quarry comes a chert rock with fossil inclusions.
These large, fossil protozoan inclusions against the dark brown chert look like distant galaxies in a dark sky.
This is not “Galaxy Rock painting” or a hand-painted stone.
This is a real, unaltered rock.
The rock was formed in the late Eocene Epoch, 33 to 56 million years ago.
It started out as a siliceous ooze in the Ocala Limestone Formation.
Some of the loose foraminifera, Lepidocyclina ocalana (giant single cell protozoans) wandered into the ooze and became inclusions when it solidified (diagenesis).
The results: rare amounts of the mined chert looks like a scene from space with distant galaxies.
You get the exact Specimen shown in the photos which is 16.4 mm long and 10.2 mm wide.
Note :
Look closely and you can see a few spirial Galaxies (=the fossil nummulite, Operculina floridensis )
and worm holes or black holes (=true fossil worm holes).
Also the last picture shown is a shot of
galaxies from the Hubble Telescope.
