Description
19th Century Aubergine Chinese Lacquered Ming Style Wedding Cabinet ArmoireThis rare aubergine 19th century lacquer cabinet is called a “Wedding Cabinet” because, in ancient China, they were made as dowries by families of brides, with size and embellishment an indication of the family’s wealth and social standing.
This tall cabinet was handcrafted from the core of an elm wood tree with the elegance of Ming dynasty simplicity. The cabinet’s structure, which is consistent with traditional, handcrafted Chinese furniture, confirms its authenticity: the two large, easily removable doors supported by wooden hinges; and the tenon and mortise joinery requiring no glue nails or other mechanical joining device. The doors feature bronze face-plates and pear shaped pulls that open to reveal two shelves and great storage possibilities.
This solid piece has been well-maintained in its beautifully-aged, original lacquer finish. The scale and magnificence of this cabinet would make a stunning statement in a large reception or living area or serve as a functional bar or entertainment cabinet.
